We've liked these displays for a long time, and they're just Feather-sized, so wouldn't a dedicated e-paper FeatherWing make a lot of sense? This 'Wing works with all Feathers, from the ESP8266 to the M0. It has built-in memory buffering so it can work with chips as small as the '32u4 and the '328. It uses a lot of pins: the 3 SPI pins and up to 4 control pins to manage the SD card slot and the SRAM.
The FeatherWing has a 2.13-inch display in three colours (red, black and white). It has 250x122 black and red colour pixels and a whitish background.
Using our CircuitPython or Arduino libraries, you can create a "frame buffer" with the pixels you want to have activated and then output it to the display. Most simple breakouts leave it at that. But if you do the maths, 250 x 122 pixels x 2 colours=7.5 KBytes. That won't fit in many microcontroller memories. And even if you have 32 Kbytes of RAM, why waste 8 Kbytes?
So we've done you a favour and put a small SRAM chip on the back. This chip shares the SPI port that the eInk display uses, so you only need one extra pin. And, no more frame buffering! You can use the SRAM to create what you want to display, and then transfer the data from the SRAM to the eInk when you're ready.
The library does all the work for you. You can simply address it as if it were an Adafruit_GFX compatible display.
We've even attached a MicroSD socket so you can store images, text files or whatever you want to display . Comes assembled and tested with female headers that you can plug your Feather directly into, no soldering required!
