These LED strips are even more fun and bright. There are 144 RGB LEDs per metre, and you can control each LED individually! Yes, that's right, this is the digitally addressable type of LED strip. You can set the colour of the red, green and blue component of each LED with 8-bit PWM precision (i.e. 24-bit colour per pixel). The LEDs are controlled by shift registers that are chained up and down on the strip so that you can shorten or lengthen the strip. Only 1 digital output pin is required to send data. The PWM is built into each LED chip, so once a colour has been set it will modulate accordingly, even if it is no longer being controlled.
All your dreams of densely strung LEDs have been fulfilled, but there are still a few things to watch out for.
- First of all, ultra-high density means much higher power consumption over a given distance - a maximum of 35 watts (~7 amps at 5V). The maximum power assumes that all LEDs are completely white. Typically, the actual current for coloured designs is about 1/3 to 1/2 of the maximum current. A good power supply is crucial!
- Second, to achieve high density, the controller chip is inside the LED, which is kind of cool, but also means that the chip only uses a single pin for input and a single pin for output. The protocol used is very very timing specific and can only be controlled by microcontrollers with a highly repeatable timing precision of 100nS. We have example code for use with the Arduino Uno/Mega microcontroller at 8MHz and 16MHz, and with a little effort you can use it with the Raspberry Pi or Beagle Bone Black, but it will not work with the Basic Stamp, NETduino, any other interpreted/virtual machine microprocessor, or any processor slower than 8MHz.
- Thirdly, just because you have all those pixels doesn't mean you have the RAM for it - the entire strip needs to be buffered in memory, and we've found that many Arduino UNO projects only have about 1500 bytes of RAM available to after all the extras have been built in - enough for about 2-3 metres of the 144 LED pixels. If you want to run several metres of and include some other libraries, use a Mega.
- This strip now comes with a weatherproof jacket, you can remove it with scissors if not desired
The strip is made of flexible PCB material, you can cut it fairly easily with wire cutters - there are cut lines for each LED. Solder to the 0.1-inch copper pads and you're ready to go. Of course you can also connect the strips together to make them longer, just be careful how much power you need! You must use a 5V DC power supply to power these strips, do not use more than 6V or you may destroy the whole strip.
They come in 1 metre strips with a 2 or 3 pin JST SM connector at each end and separate power/ground wires. There is a gap in the centre of the strip and the LEDs are not perfectly spaced at this point - this is just a compromise with the flexible PCB manufacturer's capabilities and density.

Light comes into the dark with Adafruit NeoPixel

Safety instructions
