The Adafruit USB to Multi-Protocol Serial Cable enables a computer to be connected to various serial interfaces, including RS232, TTL UART, RS485 and RS422. Thanks to practical screw terminals, simple cabling is possible without special cables or soldering work. It is connected via USB-A or USB-C, whereby a Phillips screwdriver is all that is needed to securely fasten wires.
The integrated FTDI FT231 USB-to-serial converter works with 5V logic and supports signal rates from 300 baud to 3 Mbaud. For RS-232, a UM213 signal level converter with ±8V logic and up to 250 kbps is used. RS-485/RS-422 use MAX485 chips, while the UART signals for RS232 are provided directly by the FT231 chip. The cable also provides a 5V and 3.3V supply for small projects, with up to 1A at 5V and 50 mA at 3.3V. A red LED signals readiness for operation, a green one indicates data transmission. Only one protocol can be used at a time.
The cable is used in industry, embedded development and communication technology, for example for controlling and diagnosing machines, sensors or actuators as well as for programming and error analysis of microcontrollers such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi. It can also be used to connect older devices such as measuring instruments, serial printers or GPS modules. In building and automation technology, it is used for Modbus RTU via RS-485 or RS-422 networks. Its versatility makes it a flexible solution for technicians and developers working with different serial interfaces.
