Description
Product information "Audio Amp SHIM (3W mono amplifier)"
This SHIM has a clever friction-fit header that simply slides over the GPIO pins, requires no soldering* and is easy to remove.
The MAX98357A combined DAC/amplifier chip takes high-quality digital audio signals from your Pi and amplifies them so they can be used with an unpowered speaker. The connectors make it easy to connect your speaker whether it's a bookshelf or floorstanding speaker, the speaker in an old radio or a teeny tiny mini speaker like the ones we sell here.
As the Audio Amp SHIM adds no extra bulk to your Pi, it's perfect for fitting into a compact case - you could use it to build a tiny MP3 player to play local files or stream from services like Spotify to , add the ability to play digital radio streams to an old radio, or add bleepy sounds to your very own retro handheld. It's also a handy way to add an audio output to your Pi Zero or Pi 400!
Please note that Raspberry Pis and speakers are not included with this board - check the extras section for compatible devices!
Features
- MAX98357A DAC / amplifier chip(datasheet)
- Mono 3W audio output
- Push-fit speaker connectors
- SHIM format board with friction-fit connectors
- 2 mounting holes (M2.5) in case you want to fix everything with screws
- Fully assembled
- No soldering required (*unless you are using a Pi that comes without headers)
- Compatible with all Raspberry Pi models with 40-pin header
- Dimensions: 63.3 x 15.2 x 5.4mm (including speaker connector)
The easiest way to set everything up is to use Pirate Audio software and installer, which configures I2S audio and SPI, as well as installing Mopidy and our customised Pirate Audio plugins that allow you to stream Spotify and play local files.
Here's how to get started:
- Set up an SD card with the latest version of Raspberry Pi OS.
- Connect to Wi-Fi or a wired network.
- Open a terminal and type the following:
git
clone https://github.com/pimoroni/pirate-audio
cdpirate-audio/mopidy
sudo./install.sh
- Restart your Pi
Alternatively, if you don't want to install all the Mopidy stuff, you can set Audio Amp SHIM as your default Alsa device in Raspberry Pi OS by adding the following lines to your /boot/config.txt file: dtoverlay
= hifiberry-dacgpio
= 25=op,dhIf you are using a Pi that has an audio jack, you may also need to disable onboard audio by adding a # at the beginning of the following line (this can help applications find the correct audio device automatically) #dtparam
= audio=onNotes
- You can use an audio amp SHIM with HATs and mini-HATs without booster headers as long as they don't have any chunky components on the bottom (it's a good idea to check that there are no metal components on the bottom of your HAT touching the metal components on the top of the SHIM).
- If you want to use it with a Pibow Coupé enclosure (either for the Zero / Zero W or the Pi 4), you will need to use a booster header to raise it a little.
- If you plan to use the Audio Amp SHIM to add an audio output to your Pi 400, you will also need a booster header. If you connect the SHIM directly to the back of the Pi 400, note that the SHIM should be upside down, with the mounting holes facing down. Alternatively, you can also connect it via a flat HAT hacker (in this case you do not need a booster header and do not have to connect anything upside down).
- The maximum cable diameter for the connectors is 0.75 mm² (1 mm diameter, 18 AWG). You will need tinned ends on your speaker cables so that they are stiff enough to be plugged into the connectors.
- The Audio Amp SHIM uses GPIO 18, 19 and 21 (as well as 3.3 V, 5 V and various ground connections). If you want to use it in conjunction with other boards, you must check for pin conflicts using pinout.xyz.

Optimize your Raspberry Pi - with Pimoroni
Pimoni is the expert when it comes to equipping your Raspberry Pi with high-quality add-on modules. The successful company was founded in 2012 in Sheffield, England, and now also has a branch in Essen, Germany. According to the University of Sheffield, Pimoroni is even considered one of the fastest growing manufacturing companies in the UK.
The electronics specialist has the right solution for almost every need around the Raspberry Pi. The product range also includes the Pimoroni Fan Shim, a powerful 30mm CPU fan for the Raspberry Pi, which is one of the top sellers from Pimoroni. The Fan Shim manages a powerful 4,200 RPM and delivers significant added value by optimizing the thermal performance of your Raspberry Pi. Compatibility exists with the Raspberry Pi 4, but also with the 3 B+ and 3 A+ models.
The fan is equipped with RGB LED and a tactile switch, making it wonderfully controllable. The LED serves as an indicator to track the fan status and CPU load/temperature. The tactile switch is also handy: With the help of the included Python library and a daemon, you can program it to switch between temperature-controlled automatic mode and manual mode. Thanks to its "friction-fit" header, the Pimoroni Fan Shim can easily be plugged onto the pins of your mini computer and is ready to go without soldering. In general, the installation is uncomplicated and should not take more than two minutes. While the fan is doing its job, the noise level is very low: The maximum value is only 18.6 dB.
Apart from the Pimoroni Fan Shim, many other top products from Pimoroni are available at Berrybase. The Pibow Coupé 4 is recommended for all owners of a Raspberry Pi 4: The compact case reliably protects your mini computer from external influences like dust or shocks. All ports remain open and thus accessible. The high-quality processed and easy to mount frame for the official 7" Raspberry Pi touchscreen display also fulfills its protective function perfectly. With the Pirate Audio HAT you get a first-class 3W stereo amplifier for your mini computer: Use the module in combination with your Raspberry Pi and your speakers to control the playback of your favorite music and to create powerful sound.
Depending on what you have in mind, you can also use other modules from Pimoroni, such as LED sensors, camera modules or the Pico HAT Hacker.
