micro:bit & Calliope – Everything you need to know
micro:bit and Calliope mini are two independent microcontroller platforms that were developed for use in education. They differ in design, origin and target group, but both enable an easy introduction to programming and digital technologies.
The micro:bit was developed by the BBC and is used in schools worldwide. It is suitable for programming projects as well as creative maker applications. The Calliope mini comes from Germany and was designed specifically for children from primary school age. Thanks to pre-installed components, it can be used immediately and supports playful learning in technology classes.
Both platforms offer browser-based development environments with graphical or text-based programming. They promote technical understanding and enable hands-on projects at school and in leisure time.
micro:bit microcontroller for schools, makers & beginners
The BBC micro:bit is a compact development board with integrated sensors, LED matrix, buttons, and Bluetooth, and is frequently used in STEM education. It is suitable for measurement tasks, game controllers, small robots, and creative electronics projects.
Programming is done with Microsoft MakeCode, Python or JavaScript. All editors work directly in the browser, making it especially easy to get started. The graphical interface is ideal for beginners, while more advanced users can also program in text mode.
Thanks to its versatility, the micro:bit can be used at different educational levels—from the very first programming experience to more complex applications in technology or computer science classes.
Calliope mini – Learn, program, experiment
The Calliope mini was developed in Germany and is specifically aimed at children of primary school age. The board combines ease of use with extensive features such as LEDs, buttons, speaker, motion sensors, Bluetooth and connections for motors.
It can be programmed with Open Roberta Lab, MakeCode or MicroPython. The platform was designed especially for everyday school use and is robust enough for frequent use in the classroom. Getting started is done via visual programming, but can be extended with text-based languages if needed.
If you want to get started right away, you will find a detailed step-by-step guide for your first project in our Calliope mini Guide for Beginners.
