The Elecrow Crowtail-MP3 Player 2.0 is a compact audio module for playing digital audio files in formats such as MP3, WAV and WMA. The module offers various playback functions such as ordered sequence, random playback and single repeat. It is controlled via serial communication using predefined commands. It supports the FAT16 and FAT32 file systems and is equipped with a UART interface, a micro SD card slot and a 3.5 mm audio output. A 24-bit DAC with 90 dB dynamic range and an integrated 10-stage equaliser take care of signal processing. It is connected to microcontrollers via a JST-PH 2.0 4-pin interface.
The module is intended for installation in systems where a simple and space-saving audio output is required. Typical applications include DIY electronics projects, voice-controlled systems or projects where audio files are to be played or acoustic feedback is to be generated. It is also suitable for embedded audio players in control or acoustic warning systems.
The module works with an integrated SoC chip (system-on-chip) that contains a 16-bit microcontroller, a DSP audio unit and hardware decoders for MP3/WAV. The integration of these components enables stable and low-delay audio processing. Audio data is transferred directly between memory interfaces (e.g. SD card or SPI flash) and the decoder via DMA (Direct Memory Access). Serial control via UART allows playback of specific tracks, volume control, equaliser selection, repeats or the targeted selection of individual folders and tracks. The hardware has digital audio outputs (DACL/DACR), several configurable GPIO pins and a 3.3V LDO voltage output.
The Crowtail-MP3 Player can be used to play audio files in applications with microcontrollers such as Arduino or Crowduino. Functions such as random playback, single track repeat or playback of tracks in specific folders are available via serial commands. The module allows the integration of sound into systems without their own audio processing and is suitable for alarm devices, voice output in machine control systems or automatic announcements in devices.
