The Elecrow Speech Interaction Board for Raspberry Pi is an expansion board with two microphones for voice recording, developed for applications in the field of artificial intelligence and voice control. It supports popular voice services such as Amazon Alexa Voice Service and Google Assistant and is compatible with Raspberry Pi Zero, Zero W, B+, 2 B and 3 B.
The board has a 3.5 mm audio jack and a JST 2.0 Speaker Out connector for audio playback. Two APA102 RGB LEDs provide visual feedback, for example to display status information. An integrated user button enables additional inputs. Two Grove-compatible crowtail interfaces are available for expansions. Communication takes place via GPIO, I2C and SPI interfaces. Audio processing is handled by the energy-saving WM8960 stereo codec.
The board is suitable for realising voice-controlled systems, e.g. in the AioT smart home sector, as well as for developing individual voice interactions. It enables the development of interactive AI applications that use speech as input. The hardware is configured manually using the Raspbian operating system. This includes compiling and installing a special driver for the WM8960 codec. Python scripts can be used to control the LEDs and query the user button. The LEDs use the APA102 standard with a separate driver chip for each LED.
The board uses I2S for audio transmission and also uses SPI interfaces in addition to the I2C and GPIO lines, which must be taken into account when using other modules. The crowtail connections enable the integration of additional components such as sensors or displays. The audio input and output is analogue, with the microphones on both sides of the board capturing sound signals. Installation involves cloning a GitHub repository and executing an installation script via the terminal. Manually changing the package sources for driver installation is also part of the system setup.
