Google is increasingly using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to realise its services. To this end, it has developed specialised processors called TPU ("tensor processing unit") for its data centres , which can execute the algorithms with the TensorFlow framework faster and more energy-efficiently. For example, Google Maps is improved by street signs recorded by Street View, which are analysed with the help of a neural network based on TensorFlow. The highlight: TensorFlow can be easily programmed in Python.
Google is launching the Edge TPU, which supports the TensorFlow Lite framework, a USB 3 stick on the market. The Edge TPU can perform up to 4 trillion computing operations per second with only 2 W consumption.
