E-Ink Displays arbeiten mit elektrophoretischen Partikeln, die sich innerhalb der Displaystruktur bewegen und das Umgebungslicht reflektieren. Dadurch bleibt die Anzeige auch bei starkem Umgebungslicht gut lesbar und benötigt keine Hintergrundbeleuchtung. Energie wird nur während der Aktualisierung des Bildes verbraucht, wodurch sich das Display besonders für Anwendungen mit statischen oder selten aktualisierten Inhalten eignet.
Die Aktualisierung eines Bildes dauert etwa 12 Sekunden. Das Display wird über ein Flachbandkabel mit einer Steuerplatine verbunden und kann direkt auf einen Raspberry Pi mit 40-Pin GPIO-Header gesteckt werden. Eine Python-Bibliothek ermöglicht die einfache Integration in eigene Anwendungen.
Das Modul wird vollständig montiert geliefert und enthält Montagematerial zur Befestigung eines Raspberry Pi (nicht enthalten). Auf der Rückseite befinden sich vier Tasten zur Interaktion mit Anwendungen. Zusätzlich stehen Qwiic / STEMMA QT (Qw/ST) Anschlüsse für I2C-Module sowie Erweiterungsheader zur Integration zusätzlicher Hardware zur Verfügung.
Das Display besteht aus Glas und sollte vorsichtig behandelt werden. Beim Einbau wird empfohlen, das Modul ausschließlich an den Kanten zu halten und keinen Druck auf die Displayoberfläche auszuüben. Eine Touchfunktion ist nicht vorhanden.
Für den Betrieb wird ein Raspberry Pi mit 40-Pin GPIO-Header benötigt. Besonders geeignet ist der Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, da er ausreichend Rechenleistung und Arbeitsspeicher für die Verarbeitung der hochauflösenden Bilddaten sowie für Python-basierte Anwendungen bietet.
Für kompakte oder stromsparende Projekte kann alternativ ein Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W verwendet werden, der ebenfalls genügend Leistung für typische E-Ink Anwendungen wie Informationsanzeigen, Dashboards oder Bilderrahmen bereitstellt.
