Description
Product information "Pimoroni Servo 2040 - 18 Channel Servo Controller"
The Servo 2040 is a standalone servo controller for building things with lots of moving parts. It has pre-soldered pin headers for connecting up to 18 servos - enough for the longest legged hexapod or plenty of degrees of freedom for your robot arms, legs or tentacles. Servos can be pretty power hungry, especially the chunky ones, so we've included some nice power monitoring features to help you keep an eye on power consumption.
There are six addressable RGB LEDs (also known as Neopixels) for visual feedback and status messages, as well as headers for connecting up to six analogue sensors - useful for detecting where the floor is, if you hit a wall or how much pressure the claw is putting on your unfortunate test subject. We've also included a QW/ST connector so you can easily connect a Qwiic or STEMMA QT.
The Servo 2040 is supported by a well-documented C++/MicroPython servo library with lots of examples to show you how to use the individual functions (and everything together).
RP2040 x servos
We have used the RP2040 as the centrepiece of this board because it is so flexible and has programmable IOs (PIOs). Normally, each servo must be connected to its own PWM-capable channel of the microcontroller. The RP2040 only has 16 PWM channels, but it is possible to control up to 30 servos using the PIOs (if you are familiar with the wiring). The RP2040's PIOs are also super-fast and can control servos with a resolution of less than one microsecond.
We've built the RP2040 microcontroller directly into the Servo 2040, so you don't need separate microcontroller and servo driver boards. This allows for a compact design - perfect for small robots!
Features
- Powered by RP2040 (Dual Arm Cortex M0+ with up to 133Mhz and 264kB SRAM)
- 2MB QSPI flash with support for XiP
- 18 sets of header pins for connection of 3-pin hobby servos
- Supports higher voltage servos (up to 11V) *
- 6 addressable RGB LEDs/Neopixels
- 6 sets of header pins for connecting analogue sensors
- Own voltage and current measurement
- Reset and BOOT button (the BOOT button can also be used as a user button)
- USB-C port for programming and power supply (max. 3A)
- Screw terminals for external power supply (with reverse polarity protection) (10A max. continuous current)
- Qw/ST (Qwiic/STEMMA QT) connection for breakouts
- Fully assembled (no soldering required)
- C++/MicroPython libraries
- Schematic
- Mechanical drawing
As this is an RP2040 board, the Servo 2040 is independent of the firmware! You can program it with C/C++, MicroPython or CircuitPython.
Our C++/MicroPython libraries help you to get the best out of the Servo 2040 because they are packed with powerful functions for working with servos. You'll get the best performance with C++, but if you're a beginner, we recommend using our MicroPython kit to help you get started.
You can also use CircuitPython on your Servo 2040 if you want access to all the conveniences of the Adafruit ecosystem (note that you can only control up to 16 servos with CircuitPython).
Connecting Breakouts
If your breakout has a QW/ST connector JST-SH to JST-SH cable, or you can connect any of our I2C Breakout Garden breakouts with a JST-SH to JST-SH cable; coupled with a Qw/ST to Breakout Garden adapter.- List of breakouts that are currently compatible with our C++/MicroPython build.
Notes
- Dimensions: 62mm x 42mm x 12mm (L x W x H, including connectors). The mounting holes are M2.5 and 2.7mm from each edge.
- * If you want to operate servos with a higher voltage than 5V, you must cut the "Separate USB and Ext. Power" trace on the back of the board to prevent the RP2040 from being damaged by the higher voltage.
- If you cut this trace, you will need to power the logic on the board separately (via USB or the 5V on the broken out header).
- If you are programming a battery-powered robot via USB, we recommend that you use a data-only USB adapter to avoid backfeeding your computer or battery.
About the RP2040
The RP2040 microcontroller of the Raspberry Pi is a dual-core ARM Cortex M0+ running at up to 133Mhz. It has 264kB of SRAM, 30 multi-function GPIO pins (including a four-channel 12-bit ADC), a bunch of standard peripherals (I2C, SPI, UART, PWM, clocks, etc.) and USB support.A very interesting feature of the RP2040 is the programmable IOs that allow you to run your own programs that can manipulate the GPIO pins and transfer data between peripherals - they can offload tasks that require high data transfer rates or precise timing that would normally have required a lot of work from the CPU.

Optimize your Raspberry Pi - with Pimoroni
Pimoni is the expert when it comes to equipping your Raspberry Pi with high-quality add-on modules. The successful company was founded in 2012 in Sheffield, England, and now also has a branch in Essen, Germany. According to the University of Sheffield, Pimoroni is even considered one of the fastest growing manufacturing companies in the UK.
The electronics specialist has the right solution for almost every need around the Raspberry Pi. The product range also includes the Pimoroni Fan Shim, a powerful 30mm CPU fan for the Raspberry Pi, which is one of the top sellers from Pimoroni. The Fan Shim manages a powerful 4,200 RPM and delivers significant added value by optimizing the thermal performance of your Raspberry Pi. Compatibility exists with the Raspberry Pi 4, but also with the 3 B+ and 3 A+ models.
The fan is equipped with RGB LED and a tactile switch, making it wonderfully controllable. The LED serves as an indicator to track the fan status and CPU load/temperature. The tactile switch is also handy: With the help of the included Python library and a daemon, you can program it to switch between temperature-controlled automatic mode and manual mode. Thanks to its "friction-fit" header, the Pimoroni Fan Shim can easily be plugged onto the pins of your mini computer and is ready to go without soldering. In general, the installation is uncomplicated and should not take more than two minutes. While the fan is doing its job, the noise level is very low: The maximum value is only 18.6 dB.
Apart from the Pimoroni Fan Shim, many other top products from Pimoroni are available at Berrybase. The Pibow Coupé 4 is recommended for all owners of a Raspberry Pi 4: The compact case reliably protects your mini computer from external influences like dust or shocks. All ports remain open and thus accessible. The high-quality processed and easy to mount frame for the official 7" Raspberry Pi touchscreen display also fulfills its protective function perfectly. With the Pirate Audio HAT you get a first-class 3W stereo amplifier for your mini computer: Use the module in combination with your Raspberry Pi and your speakers to control the playback of your favorite music and to create powerful sound.
Depending on what you have in mind, you can also use other modules from Pimoroni, such as LED sensors, camera modules or the Pico HAT Hacker.
