Rotary encoders can be used in a similar way to potentiometers. The difference is that an encoder has a full rotation without limit (it just keeps turning). They output grey code so you can see how much and in which direction the encoder has been turned. They're great for navigating menus and the like.
This encoder is particularly cool because it has a common anode RGB LED built in, as well as a push button.
