The Grove - I2C Thermocouple Amplifier (MCP9600) is a thermocouple-to-digital converter with integrated cold junction compensation and I2C communication interface. The module is designed for use with a type K thermocouple. Thermocouples offer a significantly larger measuring range compared to thermistors. For example, the measuring range of a K-type thermocouple is -50 °C to +600 °C. The module also supports thermocouple types J, T, N, S, E, B and R. The temperature is measured with a resolution of typically 0.0625 °C at both the hot and cold junction.
The MCP9600 is a thermocouple sensor from Microchip Technology Inc. that converts the voltage of thermocouples with integrated cold junction compensation into degrees Celsius. The component corrects the non-linear error characteristics of eight thermocouple types and outputs a temperature with an accuracy of ±1.5 °C. The correction coefficients are taken from the NIST ITS-90 thermocouple database.
The module has user-programmable registers that allow for flexible use in various temperature sensing applications. Adjustable options include a low-power mode for battery-powered applications, a digital filter for smoothing rapid temperature fluctuations and four individually programmable temperature alarm outputs for monitoring multiple temperature zones.
The integrated alarm function makes it possible to send an interrupt signal to the microcontroller via a programmable alarm pin. The four programmable alarm outputs can be set to monitor the hot or cold junction, detect rising or falling temperatures and handle a hysteresis of up to 255 °C.
