Product information "seeed Grove - Reflective infrared sensor v1.2"
The Grove - Reflective infrared sensor v1.2 is used to detect the proximity and colour of objects. The module is based on the RPR-220 reflective light sensor, which consists of an infrared LED and a highly sensitive phototransistor. The LED emits infrared light that is reflected by an object. The reflection is registered by the phototransistor, whereupon a digital LOW signal (binary 0) is output at the SIG pin. At the same time, an integrated LED indicator lights up. If there is no object in the detection area or the distance is too great, the output signal on the SIG pin remains HIGH (binary 1) and the LED remains off. The sensor has an effective detection range of 4 to 16 mm.
An LMV358 rail-to-rail operational amplifier is integrated to amplify the signal from the phototransistor. The sensitivity of the sensor can be adjusted using a potentiometer, which changes the gain of the amplifier. An integrated filter reduces interference from visible light, while a plastic lens increases sensitivity. The Grove standard connector system enables easy integration into existing projects.
The sensor differs from an ultrasonic sensor in the measurement method used. While infrared sensors work via reflected light waves and triangulation, ultrasonic sensors detect distances via sound waves and time measurement. IR sensors are less susceptible to complex object surfaces and work with invisible light.
The sensor is used to detect objects at short distances, e.g. for counting functions, tracking in robots or as a component in optical encoders. The output signals are digital and can be integrated directly into microcontroller projects. The light-sensitive range can be adjusted manually, allowing the sensor to be used flexibly in different environments.
The sensor is suitable for non-contact object detection via reflected infrared light. Typical applications can be found in robotics, optical encoders or in devices for automated detection and counting. The reflection of light-coloured surfaces is stronger than that of dark materials, which means that the type of object to be detected has an influence on the detection. The operating range of 4-16 mm allows it to be used in compact systems. Thanks to the Grove standard, the module is immediately ready for operation without soldering. The combination of IR LED and phototransistor enables a fast response and reliable detection in real time.
The module detects objects by emitting infrared light and analysing the reflection. The output is digital and signals the presence of an object with a binary LOW signal. The sensitivity can be adjusted via a potentiometer. An operational amplifier is also integrated to amplify the sensor signal. An LED display visualises the detection status. The detection range is between 4 and 16 mm. The sensor is designed in Grove format, which supports simple integration into electronic systems.
