Network connectivity: for your microcontroller
RF, WiFi, and Bluetooth modules enable microcontrollers to communicate wirelessly with other devices. They represent an essential interface for IoT applications, remote controls, or sensor networks. These modules integrate wireless communication directly into embedded systems, ranging from simple sensor projects to complex mesh networks.
433 MHz RF modules, for example, can be used to control wireless power sockets. WiFi modules such as the ESP8266 allow control via the internet, while Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) provides local connections to smartphones or other controllers – efficiently and with low power consumption.
Such modules are integrated directly onto the microcontroller board or connected via plug-in interfaces and can be controlled using digital interfaces such as UART, SPI, or I2C. This ensures a reliable connection to the network or to end devices at all times.
How are RF, WiFi, or Bluetooth modules used?
Connection is made via standard pins such as VCC, GND, and Data (e.g. TX/RX or GPIO). The power supply must match the requirements of the respective module – typically 3.3 V or 5 V.
Control is handled via serial interfaces (UART, SPI, I2C) and is usually programmed using Arduino, MicroPython, or C/C++. Corresponding libraries and development environments (e.g. Arduino IDE or PlatformIO) provide suitable examples.
Bluetooth modules often use AT commands for configuration, while WiFi modules such as the ESP8266 come with their own firmware and interfaces. For 433 MHz RF, direct data transmission with simple protocols is commonly used.

What should be considered when selecting and installing?
Before purchasing, voltage requirements, interfaces, and compatibility should be checked. Not every module is plug-and-play – software adjustments are often required.
For a stable connection, the placement of the antenna is crucial. External antennas significantly increase range, especially for 433 MHz modules or WiFi solutions in the 5 GHz band.
Drivers and libraries must match the chosen platform (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32). For professional applications, the use of certified modules, such as those with CE or FCC markings, is recommended.
