This solenoid is nice and strong and has an angled cut bolt and a good mount. It's basically an electronic lock meant for a simple cabinet or safe or door. Normally the lock is active, so you can't open the door because the solenoid is in the way. In this state it consumes no power. When 9-12VDC is applied, the bolt retracts so that it no longer sticks out and the door can be opened.
The solenoids come with the slanted flag shown above, and unlike the larger version, you can't flip the end of the flag!
You have to supply this solenoid with about 12 V DC, and ka-pow, it's now a solenoid. When you switch off the current, it goes back to being a normal lump of metal. Since it's a coil, you'll need to use a motor or a solenoid driver with kickback protection. These draw quite a bit of current, about 300 mA at 9 V and 350 mA at 12 V, so you'll need a good, strong driver.
You'll need a power transistor and a diode to drive the solenoid. In this diagram you can see how to connect them to an Arduino or other microcontroller.
