Product information "Teensy 4.0, without header"

Teensy 4.0 features a 600MHz ARM Cortex-M7 processor and an NXP iMXRT1062 chip, the fastest microcontroller available today. Teensy 4.0 is the same size and shape as Teensy 3.2 and retains compatibility with most of the pin features of Teensy 3.2.

When operating at 600MHz, Teensy 4.0 consumes approximately 100mA of power. Teensy 4.0 offers support for dynamic clock scaling. Unlike traditional microcontrollers, where changing the clock rate results in incorrect baud rates and other problems, Teensy 4.0's hardware and software support for Arduino timing functions are designed to allow dynamic speed changes. Serial baud rates, audio streaming sample rates and Arduino functions such as delay() and millis() as well as Teensyduino extensions such as IntervalTimer and elapsedMillis continue to work correctly while the CPU changes its speed. Teensy 4.0 also offers a function for switching off the power supply. By connecting a button to the On/Off pin, the 3.3V power supply can be completely switched off by holding the button for 5 seconds and switched on again by briefly pressing the button. If a button cell is connected to VBAT, the RTC of the Teensy 4.0 keeps track of the date and time even when the power supply is switched off. Teensy 4.0 can also be overclocked, far beyond 600MHz!

The ARM Cortex-M7 brings many powerful CPU features to a true real-time microcontroller platform. The Cortex-M7 is a dual-issue superscaler processor, meaning the M7 can execute two instructions per clock cycle, at 600MHz! Of course, the simultaneous execution of two instructions depends on the arrangement of the instructions and registers by the compiler. Initial benchmarks have shown that C++ code compiled by Arduino tends to execute two instructions about 40% to 50% of the time while performing numerically intensive work with integers and pointers. The Cortex-M7 is the first ARM microcontroller to use branch prediction. On M4, loops and other code that branches a lot require three clock cycles. On the M7, branch prediction removes this overhead after a loop has been executed a few times, allowing the branch instruction to be executed in just one clock cycle.

Tightly Coupled Memory is a special feature that allows the Cortex-M7 to provide fast single-cycle access to memory over a pair of 64-bit wide buses. The ITCM bus provides a 64-bit path for fetching instructions. The DTCM bus is actually a pair of 32-bit paths that allow the M7 to perform up to two separate memory accesses in the same cycle. These extremely fast buses are separate from the M7's main AXI bus, which accesses other memories and peripherals. 512K of memory can be accessed as tightly coupled memory. Teensyduino will automatically assign your Arduino sketch code to the ITCM and all non-malloc memory usage to the fast DTCM unless you add additional keywords to override the optimised default. Memory that is not accessed via the tightly coupled buses is optimised for DMA access by peripheral devices. Since the majority of M7's memory access is via the two tightly coupled buses, high-performance DMA-based peripherals have excellent access to non-TCM memory for highly efficient I/O.

Teensy 4.0's Cortex-M7 processor includes a floating-point unit (FPU) that supports both 64-bit "double" and 32-bit "float". On the M4 FPU on Teensy 3.5 & 3.6, and also Atmel SAMD51 chips, only 32 bit "float" is hardware accelerated. Any use of double, double functions like log(), sin(), cos() means slow software-implemented maths. Teensy 4.0 performs all these functions with FPU hardware.

Note: Please note that the Teensy 4.0 does not include headers and these must be purchased separately and soldered on yourself.
