The Waveshare e-ink colour display HAT+ is a 13.3 inch e-paper display that works with E Ink Spectra 6 technology. It offers a resolution of 1600 x 1200 pixels and supports display in E6 colours (red, yellow, blue), which contributes to high colour saturation and contrast. The display is optimised for operation with SPI interfaces and is supplied with a driver board.

The display is passively reflective, which means that it utilises ambient light for display and provides clear images and text under natural light or lamp light. If an additional light source is required for use in low light conditions, we recommend the EINLICHT Halo from the accessories. The display works with a greyscale colour depth of 2 and supports SPI communication for integration into control boards such as Raspberry Pi, Jetson Nano, Arduino and STM32. The optional HAT+ version with standard driver board facilitates compatibility and enables rapid development.

Spectra 6 technology
E Ink Spectra 6 technology works by using electrophoretic movements in microscopic capsules containing electrically charged colour pigments. These pigments, such as black, white, red, yellow, blue and green, are moved to the surface by electric fields, making the desired colour visible. The display consists of a colour capsule layer, transparent electrodes and a reflective background layer. This design allows content to be permanently displayed without the need for continuous energy, making various projects possible with a battery as a power supply.

The e-paper display is used in a variety of projects, including IoT applications where a resource-saving and energy-efficient solution is required. The paper-like character and viewing angle of up to 170° make the display suitable for mobile devices, industrial applications and other environments where low energy consumption and clear visualisation are crucial.

Possibleapplication scenarios

If the display is connected to a compatible single-board computer or microcontroller, such as a Raspberry Pi, Arduino, ESP32 or STM32, via an SPI interface, this opens up various possibilities. With an image refresh time of 12 seconds / maximum 19 seconds, real-time data can be regularly updated and displayed.
